Staying Safe On The Road: Bicycle Edition

It’s important to remember that the operation of any type of vehicle is a privilege, and not a right; everyone loves being able to have the freedom which operating a vehicle can provide, but it should never infringe or come at the expense of someone else’s safety.

Sharing the road is something that all different types of vehicles (cars, trucks, bicycles, etc.) must do in order for everyone to reach their destination safely. Cyclists in particular are in the most challenging position of all due to a lack of designated bike lanes and paths in certain areas; the rule for motor vehicles is to keep a minimum of a metre’s distance between cyclists on the road, however this rule isn’t always followed and enforced the way it should be. In any event, all cyclists (especially younger ones) should take the proper precautions to keep themselves as safe as possible. The following are some important tips to consider before each ride:

  • Wear a properly-fitted helmet. It is the best way to prevent head injuries and death.
  • Use hand signals and follow the rules of the road. Be predictable by making sure you ride in a straight line and don’t swerve between cars.
  • Wear bright colors and use lights, especially when riding at night and in the morning. Reflectors on your clothes and bike will help you be seen. (

Being safe on the road takes the attention and co-operation of everyone who shares it. To learn more about how to stay safe on the road while cycling in highly travelled roads, click here.
