Tips for Temporary Closures and Slowed Construction

Working remotely and the concept of social distancing are things we’ve all been getting used to. While the main focus of these initiatives is our health and safety, as well as the health and safety of the people we love, we need to be mindful that the now (temporarily) vacant worksites and/or staggered operations on worksites should also have safety procedures to maintain during the COVID19 pandemic.

Here are some tips for work sites during Temporary Closures or Slowed Construction:

• Reviewing the existing Builder’s Risk policy with a broker can ensure that coverage remains effective during any temporary shut-down of construction operations.
• Fencing keeps nuisance actors out of project sites, reducing injuries.
• The more lighting, the brighter the site, making all obstacles easily visible, as well as helps with preventing theft.
• Video security monitoring to keep a close watch on vacant premises.
• Maintain a clean and tidy worksite by removing combustible and noncombustible waste to prevent fire hazards. A lack of clutter also deters criminals, as they are no longer shielded or hidden by objects.
• Regular, daily site visits that include time logs and photos can ensure that everything is in place and secure.
• Using temporary means, like plywood or other materials, to close off and secure building envelope. This will act as a placeholder barrier before any official doors or locking mechanisms are put in place.
• Shut off drain services to avoid any potential for broken pipes or flooding.
• Having a Watchman/Watchwoman when additional personnel are absent is key to ensuring a safe and secure vacant premise.
